There’s just something so filling about the gourmet pizza that comes out of Z’s ovens. Whether it be one of their fancy pies such as the Cippolla Gorgonzola (caramelized onions, bacon, Gorgonzola crumbles) or a simple slice of pepperoni at lunch, the Italian bistro in Atlas Valley always impresses. Let’s put it this way, a few of our critics are official East Coast Pizza Snobs; they leave Z’s with glowing remarks each visit.

Cheap Eats: Zamparelli’s Italian Bistro

Jimmy and Nancy Zamparelli have the culinary chops to front a white tablecloth restaurant. They met at the Culinary Institute of America and honed their skills at marquee spots Al Forno in Providence, RI, and Wolfgang Puck’s Spago in Beverly Hills.

But when they moved to Lafayette, they did it with the intention of opening a lively neighborhood joint, where they would serve high-quality food made from fresh ingredients and priced for the family pocketbook.

WHY WE LOVE IT: This intimate little slice of a strip mall is the perfect combination of cozy and chaos: You can look into the open kitchen and watch Chef Jimmy Z lovingly assemble elegant but rustic pasta dishes, or catch the guys tossing pizza crusts before they fly into the brick oven.

WHAT TO GET: Tangy-sweet papperdelle bolognese. And do not, we repeat, do not, say no to the silky chocolate mousse, studded with shards of dark chocolate.
